The FHA is the Federal Housing Administration, which is a federal organization in the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); if your loan is an FHA-insured loan, it means it is secured by them. The lending organization takes care of all the loaned money - the FHA simply backs the loan with mortgage insurance in case the borrower does not pay off his or her loan. Accessible to all buyers, FHA loan programs are built to aid credit-worthy low-income and moderate-income families who do not have the qualifications for conventional loans. Different from the VA appraiser panel, the lending agency working with FHA actually has the freedom to choose the appraiser.

The rates on FHA loans are generally market rates, while down payment requirements are lower than for conventional loans. FHA loan programs are incredibly helpful to those buyers with less accumulated funding.
